EP Working Group should respect the full range of views

Last week, several signatories sent an open letter to the coordinator of the Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright Reform at the European Parliament Jean-Marie Cavada. It calls for an inclusion of the civil society in the process to ensure a balanced representation of views.

The signatories denounce the Working Group's approach to only invite representatives of rights holders to its meetings (see here). Copyright affects multiple stakeholders from creators to rights holders to technology firms to the civil society. Therefore this diversity of views should not only be reflected in this particular Working Group but in every forum. A one-sided copyright reform will not be accepted by the people and will not ready for the upcoming tasks. For this reason, the signatories demand a holistic approach for the future meetings, one that is not biased but respects the full spectrum of stakeholders.

The letter is backed by numerous organisations like EDRi, EFF, BITKOM, Wikimedia and also we, IGEL, support the demand. You can read the full letter here (PDF).
